BFL's Arrive at Sheltering Pines

On Saturday, June 17th, Kim Nikolai and Becky Utecht came and visted us here at Sheltering Pines. During their stay I travelled with them to Mark and Brenda Lelli's farm near Coopersville, Michigan. Brenda owns a flock of purebred registered Bluefaced Leicesters. Kim and Becky had come to purchase a few for their farms. I was along for the ride!

I had become acquainted with Bluefaced Leicesters at the Michigan Fiber Festival...having seen them there each year when Brenda and Mark Lelli brought them to show. I fell in love with their soft/fine crimpy/lustrous fleeces. So, I guess it wasn't surprising that when visiting Brenda Lelli's farm, I also came home with a pair of BFL's. I purchased a black ewe lamb and a white ram lamb.

The Bluefaced Leicesters seem to be very docile and extremely curious sheep. While the ones I purchased have not been "tamed" they will come up and smell of my hand through the gate. I think it would not take much to tame them.

I plan to breed them this Autumn. It will be fun adding this breed to our purebred Shetland flock.
